STR Reports Canada Performance for Week Ending 28 August 2010

    The Canadian hotel industry reported positive results during the week of 22-28 August 2010, according to data released by STR.

    In year-over-year measurements, the Canadian hotel industry’s occupancy was up 6.6 percent to 74.6 percent. Average daily rate increased 1.4 percent to CAD$129.11. Revenue per available room for the week rose 8.0 percent to CAD$96.34.

    Among the provinces, Ontario was the only one to report a double-digit occupancy increase, rising 12.3 percent to 74.7 percent, followed by Quebec with an 8.9-percent increase to 79.4 percent. Two provinces posted occupancy decreases of more than 5 percent: Prince Edward Island (-9.7 percent to 71.9 percent) and Newfoundland (-8.3 percent to 82.8 percent).

    Ontario experienced the largest ADR increase, up 6.9 percent to CAD$123.94, followed by Manitoba (+5.9 percent to CAD$109.98) and Quebec (+5.4 percent to CAD$141.18). Prince Edward Island (-16.9 percent to CAD$126.71) and Newfoundland (-11.5 percent to CAD$128.82) reported the largest ADR decreases for the week.

    Three provinces posted double-digit RevPAR increases: Ontario (+20.0 percent to CAD$92.53); Quebec (+14.8 percent to CAD$112.08); and Manitoba (+14.4 percent to CAD$80.51). Prince Edward Island experienced the largest RevPAR decrease, falling 24.8 percent to CAD$91.16, followed by Newfoundland with an 18.9-percent decrease to CAD$106.72.
