Waldorf Astoria Closes for Two Years of Renovations - New York Post

Excerpt from New York Post

After 86 years hosting presidents, princesses and pop stars, The Waldorf-Astoria hotel closed its gilded doors Wednesday, its glittery guests making way for two years of construction workers.

Hilton Worldwide sold the famed Manhattan hotel for $1.95 billion to the Chinese insurance company Anbang in 2014, and the new owners say they plan to “restore its public spaces to their original beauty,” while converting most of the rooms into luxury condos.

The final guests — Erik and Claes Lindbom 30-year-old twin brothers from Sweden — checked out at 2 p.m., with Erik clutching the gift shop’s last Waldorf Teddy Bear.
