Over the past few years, home sharing platforms like Airbnb, VRBO, Homeaway and Flipkey have experienced explosive growth. In particular, Airbnb’s monthly active users have doubled from Q1 2014 to Q1 2016. From a slow start in 2008, Airbnb today operates in 34,000 cities across 191 countries, providing accommodation to 60 million guests worldwide. Airbnb has become a major force in the accommodations sector with a valuation trending above market capitalizations of several global hotel companie. Unlike VRBO and Homeaway which traditionally service resort type properties, Airbnb has become the leader in home sharing within major markets with as much as 85% market share reported in cities like Vancouver.
