Great choice for an all purpose bible
I won't attempt to critque the main content of this book, which is the NIV text of the Holy Bible. The Greatest Book ever written speaks for itself.
What makes it different are the various study sections written by Charles Swindoll. If you are familiar with his radio show, you know that he brings important, practical, plainly stated messages that are loaded with the good news of God's love. Good devotional Bible 
If you're looking for a work full of footnotes with lots of commentary on ancient cultures and details on the ancient texts, this isn't it. What it is is a great devotional Bible, plus very good book introductions and some good articles about Bible characters. Such articles are not academic: they're expository, very obviously the work of a preacher, and I mean that in a good way.
