It Just Reads Awful
The plot is not bad, it has all the elements necessary to make it memorable and draw the reader in yet, in its English version the prose is lackluster and discombobulated. In some passages it is so painful to read that I just skipped over. Another thing that bothered me so, given this is a novel about a translator/interpreter Ms. Grossman should have been careful about translating the names of places, organizations, and things that were essential to the characters (Peruvian)and to those of us who speak... more info

Blah blah the bad girl
That's it, blah blah the bad girl, blah blah the bad girl until she mercifully, for the reader, dies and the novel ends with banal musings. How anyone in their right mind could review this positively is beyond me. Only occasionally do you get a glimpse of the bad girl. The main... more info

An enjoyable romp through the world
This novel paints a panoramic history of four decades of South American and European life as the story traces Ricardo's love for "the bad girl." The characters are not particularly complex, and I never really believed the love story, but I really enjoyed the romp through the world.
