My God! 
Dr. Sobel needs to stick to writing boring economic text books. I would like to thank the good doctor for stabbing my precious Appalachian culture with yet another poisoned dagger. Dr. Sobel is obviously a puppet of the republican party and has sacrificed his academic integrity to the lowest common denominator.

Timely, smart, tough, optimistic 
Nearly two years before his book appeared, Dr. Sobel discussed the foundation of these ideas with some of our State's best business, policy and education leaders at a roundtable of the nonprofit West Virginia Venture Connection (WVVC), of which I am the executive director. Bravo - Someone is not afraid to state the facts, for once... 
Dr. Sobel has written a book that is long overdue in a state that only leads in the obesity levels, lack of college graduates and numbers of people who still smoke. There are real reasons why West Virginia is poor, in an economic stalemate and finally someone is not afraid to stand up and state why. If only the elected officials would listen??????? Everyone who has any kind of vested interest in seeing WV leave the bottom of the pack should read this book. And then they should go out and vote every... more info

A Shrieking Propagandist 
I had to read the book after hearing the author crack on West Virginia Public Radio, an interview that is archived at their site. When asked about his selective use of evidence and the ideological bias proclaimed in the book's title, Sobel's only recourse was to shriek "I'm an academic!" As a humanities PHD, I was embarrassed by his histrionics.
