Great illustration, great story
The illustrations from Cooney are enchanting! I carefully examined the drawings of each picture, they come with a lot of historical content - the boys pants use lace to tie, there is a bed of hay... a room where sleep, cook, and work are all in one place. Just imagine how significant it is to have shoes - I came to a conclusion cobblers were an essential trade back then! Also, i couldn't help but to think "How do children in those times spent their time?" Well perhaps through legendary stories like this one... more info

Really fun Christmas book
Our family happened upon this book at the library one Christmas and the kids (ages 5,3,2) really enjoyed reading it. However, we knew it was a winner when the kids asked for it again the next Christmas after not having seen or talked about the book for a year. It's a lot of fun.
