Catch a Tiger By The Toe

by Thomas Wahl

Consolidation and restructuring are amongst the words used when companies merge and look for operating efficiencies. Inevitably this includes people, since the largest operating cost in our industry is payroll.

If this directly affects you, the children’s rhyme in the title above comes to mind, because you feel that you are one of the unlucky ones. While this is an easy way to justify what has happened to you, you can also take a proactive approach and effect the outcome by increasing your value to the organization.

Take a look at your performance and the value you feel that you add to your company. Do it from your own perspective and not for the company, but for yourself. If you are honest with yourself and take a critical look you will find areas where you can improve.

You know yourself the best and you will realize that you could improve your knowledge by taking courses, reading industry material, networking within and outside of the industry, keeping up-to-date with industry news, new management techniques and research and of course by asking your superiors and your employees.

You will spend no energy whatsoever on company politics and speculating what the future might hold, but put your energy into adding value to your company and yourself.

As far as I am concerned this is a win-only scenario. First and most important of all you will feel better about yourself and your achievements. Second, even if “the tiger catches you by the toe” your value to any organization has increased.

Remember, you are the boss of yourself and your knowledge, skills and talents belong to you!
