The ins and outs of timeshare resort design

The International Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show (IH/M&RS), held November 11–14 in New York City, showcased the latest products in the hospitality and foodservice industries. About 2,000 companies exhibited at the trade show, the largest in the event’s 85-year history.

Technology and design products, resources and services crowded the field of new offerings. Exhibitors showcased a variety of additional new products ranging from bathroom accessories to safety devices to wireless services. Among the more notable offerings:

Online Menu Creation System
A new online menu creation system called hqhospitality.com is designed to allow hotels, resorts, casinos, restaurants, bars, convention centers and cafes to produce their food and beverage menus and associated promotional material on the Internet. The system was developed to enable these facilities to create in-house menus inexpensively and to accommodate the need to change food and beverage lists frequently due to menu changes, holidays and special events.

Limited Edition Artwork
This company is now offering the hospitality industry new artwork by Israeli artists that includes limited edition serigraphs, mixed media originals and window box and lacquer paintings. David Schluss’ serigraphs and mixed media originals feature jovial figures and portray dancers and musicians within an ensemble of musical instruments. Calman Shemi’s window and lacquer paintings were created using vibrant colors that are painted on wood or metal that has been gilded with gold and/or silver leaf.

Self-contained Recessed Lighting Fixture
The new Firebox recessed lighting unit is designed to make fire-rated recessed applications easier, more cost effective and UL-compliant. The lighting is designed in a single, self-contained housing unit that eliminates the need for construction enhancements. The unit installs like any other recessed fixture and is UL-compliant, simplifying the approval process for building inspectors.

Outdoor Furniture Collections
This company is offering new collections of outdoor tables and seating based on its indoor collections of large deep-seated pieces. The collections include Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, Wainscott and Montauk. Constructed from Viraro wood and stainless steel and aluminum hardware, these products are designed to offer the same comfort and sophistication of the indoor collections. However, with sealants, corrosion-resistant metals and weather-resistant wood, the pieces are suitable for outdoor use.

Bathroom Accessory Holders
Stuffits bathroom accessories, which utilize the same patented split-ring technology as the manufacturer’s hookless shower curtain, are designed to eliminate the need for caddies and to enable hotel staff members to quickly tidy up counter tops. They also offer guests a way to organize their bathroom products while keeping them in easy reach.

Digital TV with Internet Technology
The new ISTV is an interactive and integrated television set that combines digital TV picture quality with access to the Internet. The product offers a range of interactive services that also include email, a monitor for guests’ laptops, Ethernet plug, fax services, customized local information, a central printer, folio review and checkout, computer games and an FM stereo radio.

Magnification Wall and Vanity Mirrors
The new Perfect Vision Optic Lens mirror line incorporates a technology designed to provide an infinite number of focal points, allowing individuals, whether they wear corrective lenses or not, to find their own focal point and see clearly when looking in the mirror. The product line is comprised of eight styles of lighted and unlighted wall and vanity mirrors in gold or chrome finishes.

Ashtray for Fire Prevention
The new Fire Beater ashtray is designed to help prevent burning, unattended cigarettes from falling and becoming a source of a potential deadly fire. The ashtray is constructed exclusively from thermal fire resistant plastic and can reduce the risk of fire due to a design that incorporates the use of "ribs," which grip cigarettes to prevent them from falling.

In-Shower Mirror Defogger
The new SV Power 2000 in-shower bathroom mirror defogger allows users to see themselves in the shower, facilitating makeup removal, shaving and moisturizing. According to the manufacturer, the product is easy to use and install. The thin defogger fits unnoticeably on the back of the mirror and, by flicking a light switch, the heater warms the mirror, preventing condensation.

Valve System
M-Pact is a new valve architecture that allows hotels to upgrade the style of an entire bath or sink without replacing any plumbing. Each trim piece in the system fits on a common valve underbody. Once installed, the trim can be upgraded or changed without having to go under the sink or behind the shower wall.

High-speed, Wireless Internet Access
These wireless products and services are designed to enable hotel guest to access the Internet anywhere in a facility by plugging a small wireless device into their notebook computers. The products and services are truly plug-and-play, requiring no internal setting or configuration changes. The provider states that the service’s wireless access provides all of the speed of a DSL or Category 5 wired connection while allowing users the freedom to move about the hotel.

Handheld Device for Data Tracking, Reporting
Stella is a new wireless handheld device designed to assist hotels in managing room availability, facilitating maintenance requests and tracking hotel operations. The device integrates completely with any property management suite and allows users to enter data into customizable forms enabled with the instrument’s software.
