Room Attendants, or Maids as they were called in a previous life, are probably the most under appreciated employees in a hotel. They work for eight hours, pretty much by themselves, completing repetitive tasks, and rely very much on being self-motivated. Why tell you, the guest this?
Make it your business to find out the name of your room attendant if you can. Even if you can’t, leave a little note saying thank you. I am not suggesting that you leave a tip, although this was a practice many years ago. Your recognition of that employee generates motivation as this rarely happens. The result will be great service for you!

If you frequently stay at a particular hotel or stay for several days, this method becomes even more effective. Often times the room attendant will have your room prepared based on your preferences.

If you are really fortunate you might stay in a hotel where this interaction with the room attendant is encouraged by management. Employees are trained specifically to learn your likes and dislikes, how to interact with you and ensure your preferences are catered to.

If you have any great experiences with room attendants, please send an email to me at twahl@hotelinsider.com and I’ll see how we can have that individual recognized.
