  • STR Global STR Global issued it's 2011 Global Construction Pipeline Report update for December:

    Central and South America

    The Central/South America hotel development pipeline comprises 197 hotels totalling 28,897 rooms.

    Among the markets in the region, Panama City, Panama, reported the largest expected growth (59.6 percent) if all 5,952 rooms in the country’s total active pipeline open. Other markets to report significant growth include: San Jose, Costa Rica (+13.0 percent with 770 rooms); Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (+11.6 percent with 2,726 rooms); Lima, Peru (+7.1 percent with 381 rooms); and Santiago, Chile (+4.9 percent with 398 rooms).

    Caribbean and Mexico

    The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline comprises 127 hotels totalling 17,869 rooms.

    During 2011, 32 new properties comprising 4,886 rooms opened in the region. Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upscale segment reported the most new rooms with six properties and 1,472 rooms, followed by the Upper Midscale segment (nine properties with 1,302 rooms) and the Independent segment (8 properties with 1,107 rooms).

    During 2012, the region is expected to open 59 properties with 7,424 rooms. The Upper Midscale has the most rooms planned to open in 2012 with 18 properties and 1,996 rooms, followed by the Upscale segment with 14 properties and 1,745 rooms.

    Middle East and Africa

    The Middle East/Africa hotel development pipeline comprises 496 hotels totalling 133,438 rooms.

    Among the key markets in the region, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, reported the largest number of rooms in the In Construction phase with 13,349 rooms. Four other markets reported more than 1,500 rooms under construction: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (5,298 rooms); Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (2,687 rooms); Cairo, Egypt (1,977 rooms); and Amman, Jordan (1,507 rooms).

    Europe

    The Europe hotel development pipeline comprises 891 hotels totalling 143,484 rooms.

    Among the countries in the region, the U.K. ended December with the most rooms under construction, reporting 11,687 rooms. Four other countries reported a significant number of rooms under construction: Russia (8,066 rooms); Turkey (5,227 rooms); Germany (4,969 rooms); and Italy (3,129 rooms).

    Asia Pacific

    The Asia/Pacific hotel development pipeline comprises 1,460 hotels totalling 355,957 rooms.

    Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upper Upscale segment accounted for the largest portion of in the total active pipeline (25.6 percent with 91,192 rooms). Three other segments each accounted for more than 15 percent of rooms in the total active pipeline: the Upscale segment (23.0 percent with 81,748 rooms); the Luxury segment (19.1 percent with 67,847 rooms); and the Unaffiliated segment (15.2 percent with 54,027 rooms).
