Today, on the first day of Pollution Prevention Week, Sandals Resorts International (SRI) announced that all 19 Sandals and Beaches Resorts across seven Caribbean islands - including Jamaica, the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, Barbados and Turks & Caicos - will eliminate the 21,490,800 single-use plastic straws and stirrers used across the resorts each year by November 1, 2018.
Its no longer a passing trend. Being sustainable is the need of the hour and hotels - big and small - around the world are joining in.
When staying at hotels, travelers tend not to treat the guestroom like their own home. No surprise there. Assuming that is the case, why trust them to report something as simple as a leaking toilet?
With all the attention given to plastic straws, stirrer sticks and cutlery over the past year, not enough attention has been given to plastic water bottle alternatives. Green Lodging News has reported on water filtration systems and glass bottle delivery of that water within the hotel. That approach is a great idea but can make only a tiny dent in the overall plastic bottle waste problem.
