Research Round-Up: Travel Exports Regain Pre-9/11 Share, Plus What Inflation Levels Say About Future Economic Growth
Earlier in February, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that travel exports increased in December 2016 for the sixth month in a row, after declining for much of the first half of the year, bringing international travel’s share of total U.S. exports to 11.2 percent. This is the sector’s highest share of spending in the U.S. since 2000, just before the fallout from the September 11, 2001 attacks caused U.S. market share to plummet sharply among other global destinations. Beginning July 1, 2017, Hainan Airlines' frequent flyer awards program, the Fortune Wings Club, will change the way it values accruals. Members will earn points based on ticket price and membership level instead of flight distance and class. The higher the price, the more points a member can earn. Today, President Trump issued a revised executive order following the initial travel ban that came out on January 27, which was halted by court order. The revised order bans foreign nationals from Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen who don’t have a valid visa from entering the United States for 90 days.
